Fall 2009 Seminar Application Process

Below is the process for gaining admission to all seminars offered by the Columbia and Barnard History Departments.

1. Students do not have the ability to pre-register for seminars; the option has been blocked by the Registrar. Students may only register for a seminar once they have received official notification from the department or professor that they have been admitted to it.

2. Submit a fully-completed online seminar application form during the submission period. This semester, the period will be from Monday, March 30-Monday, April 6 at 5:00pm. The application will be removed from the website at that point. Follow all the instructions in the form. Please note: the order in which online applications are received does not factor into seminar admission decisions. Faculty may give priority in seminar admission to senior history majors who still need to fulfill their seminar requirement.

3. Listed of accepted/waitlisted students will be posted here in mid-April.The lists will indicate which seminars are closed or full and which are open or still have slots available based on the results of the seminar application process.

4. If you receive two closed seminar acceptances, you must decline one by 5pm Friday, April 24 by emailing emk2114@columbia.edu.If you no longer wish to take a seminar to which you have been accepted, please email emk2114@columbia.edu as soon as possible. Based on these sources of attrition, instructors may accept additional students into their seminars. Instructors will notify students via email if they have been accepted in this way. All of these changes will be noted on the accepted/waitlisted student lists.

5. If you have not received any seminar acceptances, did not participate in the seminar application process, or if the seminar to which you have applied has been canceled, you may attend the first meeting of any open seminar to gain admittance directly from the instructor.

6. If you are admitted to a seminar, you must attend its first meeting. If you miss the first two meetings, the instructor may drop you from the roster and give your spot to another student. If you are on the waiting list for a seminar, you must attend its first meeting to have a chance at being admitted directly by the professor.

7. Accepted students will be registered by the History Department once class lists are determined.
