RolmPhone Services

Columbia uses the Rolm telephone system in all academic and residential buildings. Each residence hall room is equipped with a basic model 120 RolmPhone that is connected to a campus-wide network and features a wide range of complimentary services, including on-campus dialing, voicemail, call forwarding, call waiting, and one-way speakerphone. Since your phone service already has voicemail, you do not need to provide your own answering machine. In fact, because the Rolm system is digital, an answering machine will not work when connected to it.

Optional Phone Services

The following services are available for a monthly charge* to your AT&T ACUS account:
  • 624 Upgrade Service ($10.00/month) allows you to exchange the regular RolmPhone in your room for a 624 model with caller ID display and a two-way speaker.
  • 624 Private Plus Service ($19.50/month) allows you to install an additional private line on your 624 model RolmPhone with caller ID display and a two-way speaker.

*All charges are subject to change. Your student account will be billed for the cost of unreturned Optional Service equipment.

Off-Campus and Collect Calls

On-campus calls are complimentary. Off-campus local calls are billed at three different rates, determined by the time of day. Long distance rates may vary. Go to www.columbia.edu/cuit/telecomm/student/for more detailed information.

Off-campus calls are made by using a Personal Security Code (PSC) provided by AT&T ACUS Service. Your PSC is a campus calling card that allows calls to be billed to you when you enter your private code. Your AT&T ACUS account and PSC will be sent to your home address prior to your August arrival or can be picked up at the Office of Communications Services in 102 Philosophy. To make off-campus calls from any Rolm station, dial 97, followed by your PSC and the number. To dial toll-free area codes (e.g., 800), dial 96 + 1 + area code + number.

You will receive an email around the 5th of each month notifying you that your bill is ready for viewing. If you prefer, you may arrange to receive your invoice via campus mail for $1.50 per month. It is your responsibility to notify AT&T ACUS of any changes to your email, home, campus address, or phone number. Go to www.acus.com using your 10-digit account number and 10-digit PSC. You may also call them at 1-800-445-6063.

There is a service charge for receiving collect calls and all other manually billed calls. Roommates using a common line will share the bill if it cannot be determined which party is responsible.

Troubleshooting

If you have a problem with your phone service, try the following before you call for repairs:

  • Make sure your phone is plugged into the “voice” side of the two-sided or four-sided voice/data jack. If there happens to be a standard telephone jack in your room, do not use it.
  • Try connecting another phone to the jack in question. If this phone also fails to produce a dial tone, the jack is most likely in need of repair. If the second phone works properly, the problem is most likely with your current phone.

  • Try replacing the wall cord from your nonworking phone with the wall cord from a functioning phone. If the phone still does not work, try replacing the receiver cord.

  • If your phone, phone-jack or phone-receiver cord is broken, you may obtain another one at the CUIT Client Service Center in 102 Philosophy Hall.

If you still have problems, contact the Client Service Center at 212-854-1919. Providing them information regarding the exact nature of the malfunction will assist the Help Desk in restoring your phone service as quickly as possible. Go to www.columbia.edu/cuit/telecomm/student/ for more information.
