John JayPart of the quad located east of Butler Library, this first-year hall is composed of mainly single occupancy rooms, which is the main difference between John Jay and the double occupancy rooms of Carman Hall. It is a 15-story building that offers great views of either downtown Manhattan or Columbia University campus from every window. It was built in 1925 in memory of John Jay, the first Supreme Court Justice of the United States and was the last McKim, Mead, and White residence hall built on campus. The street address for John Jay is 519 W. 114th Street. LayoutThe building stands 15 stories high with 400 singles and 29 doubles and houses only first-year students. Each floor has a separate men’s and women’s bathroom that is shared by the residents. The lounges on each floor have cable televisions, and microwaves can be found in a pantry at the end of each hallway. The Health Center is located on the fourth floor of the building, just inside the main doors. The main dining hall on campus is on the ground floor of John Jay, and JJ’s Place is conveniently located in the basement for late night snacks. The John Jay lounge offers a great atmosphere for events, meetings, or studying with its high ceilings, chandeliers, fire place, and grand piano. What Students Say“With over 40 first years from all over the world bringing their talents to my floor, there was never a shortage of activity--whether it was working on a problem set together, going to Times Square, checking out a museum exhibit, or finding a group to chow down in the dining hall. I also loved being able to go to JJ's Place in my pajamas at 3am!" "My first-year experience in John Jay shaped my Columbia experience. It seemed every door was open each night with eager, bright people ready to make the most of college and NYC. I have 11th floor pride." "Having a single as a first-year in an all first-year hall gave me the privacy I needed as well as the social element of residence hall life. People would leave their doors open and stop in to talk all the time. The floor camaraderie built throughout the year lasts all through your four years here, and as a senior, I can say that some of my closest friends were my floormates. It's also great having the dining hall and JJ's [Place] right in your building!"
