Division of Oral Epidemiology and Biostatistics
Head: Dr. Athanasios I. Zavras
Aims of the Division:
Education & Training
Train dentists in the art and science of public health, with a particular focus in the development and application of innovation (clinical, genomic, technological or analytical) to address persistent health problems of the population globally. The training program is based on close collaboration with the Mailman School of Public Health, and adheres to the guidelines of the American Board of Dental Public Health.
Research
The Division's research integrates epidemiology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, social and behavioral sciences into public health. Examples of active research projects include:
-
Molecular epidemiology, gene environment interactions, and the evaluation of biologic pathways that lead to disease, especially cancer and osteonecrosis of the jaw,
-
Discovery and validation of genomic technologies with the potential to reduce the burden of disease and to address health disparities,
-
Development and application of public health screening programs aimed to assess disease risk and/or to identify disease early,
-
Using public health sciences to develop evidence-based health policies to allow wide use of safe and effective genomic technologies by the population,
-
Global health and system evaluation, health services research, and comparative effectiveness,
-
Knowledge discovery in databases and disease surveillance
Patient Care
Several opportunities exist to apply the principles of public health to improve the oral health of the people we serve locally or globally.
