Introduction
"Different people call on [God] by different names: some as Allah,
some as God, and others as Krishna, Siva, and Brahman. It is like
the water in a lake. Some drink it at one place and call it 'jal,'
others at another place and call it 'pani,' and still others at a
third place and call it 'water.' The Hindus call it 'jal,' the Christians
'water,' and the Moslems 'pani.' But it is one and the same thing."
(Shri Ramakrishna)
The Hindu Students Organization provides a
forum for students to practice and explore Hinduism in an atmosphere marked by tolerance,
openmindedness, and a willingness to engage in dialogue. Although Hinduism and its customs
take many forms, the HSO focuses on weekly devotional services, pujas on auspicious
occasions, seva or service, and a general celebration of Hindu traditions and festivals.
In order to reflect the diversity of the Hindu community, the HSO maintains a nonsectarian
position with regard to the beliefs, practices, and politics it espouses.
The HSO’s mission is to foster dialogue, facilitate the practice, and raise awareness of Hinduism
through discussions, lectures, religious events, cultural celebrations, and community service.
