Summer 1997 Research Fellowship
The Institute of African Studies (IAS) announces a competition for summer field research support in Africa. The award is for up to $1500. The purpose of the award is to enable a student to conduct an 8-12 week independent research project in order to gain experience in field research, possibly as preparation for a longer term dissertation research project.
DEADLINE: APRIL 1, 1997
WHO IS ELIGIBLE: American citizens or permanent residents who are registered graduate students within the Columbia University system.
GUIDELINES: Applicants will be required to provide the following:
- 1. A research proposal of approximately five pages (doubled-spaced), describing the work to be undertaken and its scholarly implications, as well as the duration and itinerary of the project. It should include the name of the institution in the country of the intended project with which you plan to affiliate while in the field.
- 2. A budget indicating how you intend to use the IAS award, what other expenses you expect, and how you plan to supplement the IAS award. Allowable expenses for the award include travel to and within the proposed country of research, as well as some maintenance costs and research expenses.
- 3. A curriculum vitae which includes information on your language competency.
- 4. A letter of recommendation from a sponsoring member of the faculty who agrees to supervise the research project.
- 5. One additional letter of reference.
- 6. A copy of your graduate transcripts (it does not have to be sealed, but should be up-to-date).
REPORTING REQUIREMENTS:
- 1. Award winners will report to the Fellowship Committee within thirty days of their return from the field. Receipts and canceled tickets will be presented for all vouchered expenses. No reimbursements will be allowed without receipts for allowable expenses.
- 2. Award winners will provide a report within sixty days of their return from the field. The report must include an itinerary, an accounting of expended funds, and a statement regarding the next stage of the project.
- 3. Award winners will submit a research paper that contains a description and preliminary analysis of research results. The paper will be formally presented to faculty and fellow students in a post-fieldwork seminar in the Fall 1997 semester.
