Quiénes somos y quiénes formamos Iberia |
Iberia es la asociación de españoles
(e hispanófilos) de Columbia. En ella estamos estudiantes, profesores,
postdocs, visiting-scholars de la Universidad, además de otras personas
de otras Universidades, como NYU, Rockefeller, Brandeis, Fordham, etc.
Los objetivos de Iberia son:
- Facilitar el contacto
entre la comunidad española
de Columbia y los antiguos alumnos.
- Organizar eventos académicos,
culturales y sociales para sus miembros, afiliados y la comunidad de
Columbia.
- Promocionar la cultura española
en la Universidad.
Uno de los objetivos de Iberia Columbia es coordinar las
actividades promovidas por sus miembros. Éstas son mayoritariamente de
carácter cultural. Por ejemplo, recientemente la asociación ha organizado visitas
al Metropolitan Museum, el Metropolitan Opera o a la exposición de pintura de
Miquel Barceló. Igualmente la asociación se propone promover la cultura española
en Nueva York y reforzar los lazos de la comunidad española en Columbia. Recientemente
hemos organizado clases de flamenco, proyecciones de películas españolas y visionados
de partidos de la Liga española, así como una expedición al Madison Square Garden
para animar a Pau Gasol.
Entre nuestros próximos
planes se encuentra la organización de una serie de charlas
"Príncipe de Asturias", en la cual personalidades que han sido galardonadas
con el premio y que actualmente residen en Nueva York vendrían a compartir su
experiencia con estudiantes de la Universidad.
Miembros de Iberia organizaron en 2005 la constitución
del Columbia University
Club of Spain, que es la primera asociación oficial de ex-alumnos de Columbia
en España. Hay miembros de Iberia en buena parte de los departamentos de Columbia
y varios estudiantes forman o han formado parte de los máximos órganos de representación
dentro de Columbia, como el Senado y varios comités ejecutivos.
En definitiva, Iberia es una asociación profundamente
involucrada en el día a día de la Universidad de Columbia
y nuestro deseo es que siga siendo así, por lo que os invitamos
a que os involucréis tanto
en la participación como en la organización de todos nuestros eventos.

Constitution of Iberia: Spanish
Association at Columbia University
Article I: Name of
Organization
The name of the organization
is: IBERIA: Spanish Association at Columbia.
Article II: Purpose
The purposes of the
Association shall be:
- to bring together people
interested in Spanish and Ibero-American culture.
- to organize and support
academic, cultural and social events for its members, affiliates and the
Columbia community in general.
- to promote the interaction
among the Columbia community and alumni.
Article III: Membership
- All students of the
Columbia community interested in Spanish culture are eligible for membership.
- Any member of the Columbia
University community is eligible to become a member of this organization. One
is considered a member of this organization in any given academic term if s/he
has attended at least one club activity and one meeting in the preceding or
current term.
- Members of the Columbia
community and other New York residents who show a keen interest in Spanish
affairs and culture can become affiliates of the Association.
- The membership of this
organization will at all times contains at least 5 Columbia students and be
more than 25% of GSAS Columbia students.
- This organization will not
discriminate based on any characteristic listed in
Columbia's Nondiscrimination Statement.
Article IV: The Committee
- The Committee shall be the
administrative, organizing and judicial body of the Iberia Association.
- The Committee shall
consist of three to five officers and the members-at-large.
- The Committee shall
supervise admission of new members.
- The Committee shall be
responsible for the planning and organization of all events of the Iberia
Association
Article V: Officers
The
rights and responsibilities of officers and members-at-large shall be:
- President
- The president shall be
the official representative of the association in all matters.
- The president will
preside over all meetings.
- The president is
responsible for determining when meetings are and publicizing this to the
group.
- He shall be a voting
member of the Committee
- Vice-President
- The vice president
shall take over all duties of the president in his/her absence.
- He shall be a voting
member of the Committee
- Treasurer
- The treasurer shall be
responsible for the finances of the group.
- The treasurer is
required to sign all checks/vouchers of the group.
- He shall maintain
detailed financial records of all the association events
- Other officers
- In addition there may
be officers with specified functions, such as sports chair, activities
chair, web master, etc
- They shall be voting
members of the Committee.
- Members-at-large
- Members-at-large shall
assist in the organization of Iberia Association events and programs. They
also organize the participation of the Club in intramural sports.
- They shall be appointed
by the Committee and be nonvoting members of the Committee. Their appointment
shall expire with the Committee under which they serve.
- Only Columbia students
shall be eligible to serve as President of Iberia Association and they must
have belonged to the Iberia Committee for at least six months.
- Elections:
- Elections of officers
shall occur at the beginning of the academic year.
- Any member of this
organization is eligible to run for office.
- Any member is elected if
he or she wins a majority of the voting members.
- If more than two people
are running and no one wins a majority, then the person with the fewest
votes is dropped from the ballot and votes are recast.
- The term of office runs
for an academic year, starting in fall semester.
- Any member of the
Committee can resign by submitting a written letter of resignation to the
Committee.
- Members of the Iberia
Committee can be removed if they fail to attend two subsequent Iberia
Committee meetings without excuse.
- Three voting members of
the Iberia Committee have to approve the removal of an officer.
Members-at-large can be removed by a majority vote of the Iberia Committee.
- Removal: Officers may be
removed by a two-thirds vote of the members.
Article VI: Meetings
- General Meetings shall be
held once a year.
- Special general meetings
have to be called either, at least, by two committee members or by 10 members
- Committee meetings shall
be held at least twice a semester. All decisions shall be made by a majority
vote of all members present.
- Quorum for a meeting shall
be by one quarter of the members of the organization.
Article VII: Amendments
- Amendments shall be
presented by any member of the organization.
- Amendments shall be passed
by a two-thirds voted of the members present.
- The text of a proposed
amendment shall be submitted to all full members of the Club at least one day
prior to a general.
Article VII: GSAC Clause
The Iberia Association
agrees to abide by the rules and regulations of the Graduate Student Advisory
Council (GSAS), and its executive board. This constitution, amendments to it,
and the by-laws of this organization shall be subject to review by the GSAC
Executive Board to insure that they are in accordance with the a aforementioned
rules and regulations.
