The Institute for Comparative Literature and Society administers a concentration (for students pursuing doctoral study in the languages and literatures departments) and a certificate (for those in Ph.D. programs in the social sciences). ICLS is the only entity that can grant formal recognition of the concentration or certificate in Comparative Literature and Society for Ph.D. students in participating departments, and students must apply for admission by the end of their first year of study. They must satisfy all requirements for a participating department's doctorate in both their primary discipline and in the the concentration or certificate in Comparative Literature and Society, and their transcripts reflect this fact.
