To be a Recognized Student Group by IGB, a group must be interschool in nature having student member from either graduate and undergraduate schools or multiple graduate schools with no more than 75% of the membership from one individual school.

Recognized student group must directly foster a strong academic and personal community for students on campus. The group must also have a membership minimum of at least 10 degree-seeking candidates of Columbia University in the City of New York with the President and Treasurer being degree-seeking candidates of Columbia University in the City of New York as members.

A group recognized by IGB must not duplicate the function and/or stated purpose of any other IGB group, other governing bodies or student groups. Further, it must require access to University facilities and resources not otherwise available to them as an Un-Recognized group, be willing to assume financial responsibility for damage caused by the group to any space or equipment to University facilities, and be willing to accept the constitution, bylaws, and decisions made by IGB and attend the necessary training.

Finally, the group must provide the IGB with any information requested with regards to the group's sources and uses of funding, be open to all members of the Columbia community regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender, veteran's status, or physical ability, and accept all rules mandated by University policy and local, state, and federal law.
