Bayard Rustin was active in many aspects of the national labor and civil-rights movement beginning in the 1940s. He was a key organizer of the March on Washington and the Montgomery bus boycotts beforehand. His observations of the racial and ethnic breakdown of Harlem commerce reflect the time the oral-history interview was conducted (1985).
