Columbia University Housing for Faculty & Staff

General Information

The University’s Housing Priorities Committee, which is chaired by the Provost, sets guidelines which govern the type of housing for which officers are eligible. It also determines the assignment of certain types of apartments, including those typically leased to senior faculty. Columbia University Facilities directly manages the assignment of all other University apartments, subject to availability, following guidelines provided by the Housing Priorities Committee.

Eligibility and Priority

At present, because the demand for housing greatly exceeds the supply of available apartments, only full-time, compensated Officers of Instruction, Research and Libraries (including those with visiting appointments) are eligible to apply. Part-time Officers are not eligible for University housing. In general, priority for housing is given first to full-time Officers of Instruction, followed by Officers of Research and Officers of the Libraries. In determining who is shown apartments, priority is given to those in greatest need. Newly appointed Officers moving to New York from outside the Tri-State area are considered for housing first. Applications from new Officers already living in New York and immediate environs are given lower priority.

Applying for Faculty & Staff Housing

Eligible officers of instruction and research may apply to the Manager of Faculty & Staff Housing, in the CUF offices at 90 Morningside Drive. The applicant should bring a letter from the appropriate dean or vice president confirming that they hold a full-time, compensated appointment. All applicants will be asked to complete a short application form. Faculty Housing Application Form

Description of Buildings and Apartments

Most Columbia apartments are located in prewar elevator buildings. A smaller number are located in postwar buildings built between the 1960’s and present. 90% of buildings are located within easy walking distance of the Morningside campus, while a few others are 30 minutes from campus by public transportation. Apartment sizes vary from studios to larger family units. In most cases, apartments and buildings are serviced and maintained by Columbia University staff.

Leasing, Utilities, and Moving In for Faculty & Staff Tenants

Faculty and staff tenants will receive detailed information from the Manager of Faculty & Staff Housing about lease signing, arranging for utilities and moving in.
