Columbia University Housing for Post Doctoral Fellows, Visiting Scholars, Journalism Fellows, and Law Associates
Contents
How to Apply
Post Doctoral Fellows, Visiting Scholars, Journalism Fellows, and Law Associates (Fellow(s)) interested in obtaining University housing should submit an application online to the University Apartment Housing (UAH) office. (Click here for the Fellow Housing Application.) Your school or department will provide you with a username and password to access the application.
If you are a Post Doctoral Fellow with the Medical Center, please contact Adele Selik, as1034@columbia.edu for information on applying for housing. If eligible, the username and password for the Fellow Housing Application will be provided to you.
UAH receives all fellow housing applications and then forwards them to the appropriate sponsoring department for review and approval. Fellow housing is very limited in supply and housing is not guaranteed until approval is obtained from your sponsoring department.
UAH will notify you by email whether or not your housing application has been approved by your sponsoring department. If you are approved and you requested that UAH assign an apartment to you, we will email an Offer of Assignment no later than 30 days before the start of your program or immediately after UAH receives the approval from your sponsoring department. If you are approved and you requested to view apartments before making a selection, please contact us at 212-854-9313 to make an appointment. These procedures are more fully described below.
If you need to alter your application, please do not submit a new application. Rather, email any changes.
Any fellow with a disability or health condition that may affect his or her assignment is urged to apply for housing as early as possible and to indicate the disability on the application. These fellows must also contact the Office of Disabilities Services (212) 854-2388; TDD: (212) 854-2388; Fax: (212) 854-3448; Email: disability@columbia.edu.
Eligibility
University Apartment Housing for fellows is only for the duration of a full-time appointment and in no event may exceed a period of three years.

Types of Housing Available
UAH housing is managed by Columbia University Facilities. These properties consist of apartments, primarily located within a few blocks of the campus. Fellows with a family are typically accommodated in one or two bedroom apartments, subject to availability. Single fellows are typically accommodated in efficiencies and smaller one bedroom apartments. In addition, single fellows may elect to be accommodated in apartment shares.
The following basic categories of accommodations are available to fellows and several are available with or without furnishings. Furnished units typically include a single bed (full sized mattress for couples’ housing), desk, chair, dresser, and lamp in each bedroom, and a couch, chairs, and coffee table in the living room, as well as a dining table with chairs in the kitchen or living room. A stove and refrigerator are provided in all units. In general, air conditioners, dishwashers, and microwave ovens are not provided. Linens, cooking utensils, dishes, and cutlery are not provided. Please carefully review the descriptions and rate information presented below to determine the type of housing unit most suitable for your needs and personal budget.
- Efficiency/Studio Apartments
Typically these are one-room apartments with a private bathroom and either kitchen appliances along one wall of the room or a separate kitchen area. Less than ten percent of these units are furnished, and utilities charges are generally not included in the rent. Single tenants or couples may live in efficiencies. Efficiency apartments are limited in number so demand usually exceeds availability.
- One and Two Bedroom Apartments
These units have a living room, kitchen facilities, one or two separate bedrooms, and a bathroom. They vary in size, and most are unfurnished. Utilities are generally not included in the rent. Couples and fellows with children are given priority in assignment of one and two bedroom apartments. Two bedroom apartments are very limited in supply.
- Apartment Shares
The number of apartment shares for Post Doctoral Fellows is limited. These are apartments that contain from two to four-bedrooms. Most apartment shares are single-sex. Each tenant has a private bedroom and shares the common areas of the apartment--kitchen, living room, and bathroom--with the other tenants in the apartment. Tenants are responsible for the cleaning of common areas and their own rooms. Apartment shares are used to house single tenants only. Rent is typically billed monthly. Couples, family members or friends are strictly prohibited from sharing the accommodations with tenants. Pets are strictly prohibited in these accommodations.

University Apartment Housing Rates
Below are the monthly rate ranges for each type of accommodation. Heat and hot water are included in all units. It should be noted that in units where utilities are not included, an additional cost of approximately $60-100 per month per unit (not per person) should be anticipated. In addition, it is the resident's responsibility to contact Con Edison (800-752-6633) and Verizon Telephone (212-890-2350) before arrival to arrange for their services.

Selecting a University Apartment
The housing application asks fellows to select: a) if they want UAH staff to assign an apartment in advance of their arrival (Directly Assign Based on Preferences) or b) if they want to view available housing at the time of their arrival in order to select an apartment (In-Person Selection).
Direct Assignment of Housing
In making assignments, UAH considers the following factors: your status (single, couple, or family); the preferences you indicated on your application; the date you will arrive; and the availability of housing units at the time of your arrival. You will be emailed one Offer of Assignment which will include a brief description of the unit, general tenant information, and instructions for accepting the Offer. With the Offer you will also receive information about payment of the required deposits.
To accept your Offer of Assignment:
- Email the UAH office to accept the Offer and confirm the Billing Start Date (the date from which you will be responsible for rental payments);
- Pay the required deposits and rent (usually equivalent to 2 months’ rent) detailed in your Offer of Assignment by credit or debit card. UAH accepts VISA, MasterCard, AMEX, and Discover cards. If you cannot make these payments using a credit card, alternative instructions will be included with your Offer of Assignment.
If you have any questions about the Offer, please contact the UAH office at 212-854-9313.
