Biography
Elizabeth Blackmar, professor, specializes in social and urban history. She received her B.A. from Smith in 1972 and her Ph.D. from Harvard in 1981. Her publications include Manhattan for Rent, 1785–1850 (1989) and The Park and the People: A History of Central Park, co-authored with Roy Rosenzweig (1992). Her most recent essay, "Appropriating the 'Commons': The Tragedy of Property Rights Discourse" will be published in The Politics of Public Space, edited by Setha Low and Neil Smith.
