Workshop on Palestinians in Israel Revisited

Columbia University, New York City

June 1-2, 2007

This workshop will focus on Palestinians in Israel, an important yet relatively under-researched subject. Anthropologists, sociologists, and women's studies scholars will present analyses of social, cultural and political dimensions of Palestinian life in Israel, focusing particularly on gender. The participants are part of an exciting young generation of women academics, all Palestinian citizens of Israel. These emerging scholars and activists have trained and/or taught in a variety of institutions of higher learning, from Harvard to Bethlehem University. They will present work on Palestinian communities in Israel based on new research and fieldwork, intensive archival research, wide ranging interviews, oral histories, and internet surveys, situating themselves in specific locations, with attention to historical shifts, unofficial histories and previously ignored economic and political dynamics.

Existing studies of Palestinians in Israel either ignore gender or focus on reified categories of “Arab women. Much writing on Palestinians in Israel also assumes one of two orientations. The first focuses primarily on the state and its repressive measures. The second orientation looks at Palestinian traditions, practices and culture—with little attention to the powerful structural and political contexts that mold these. This group of feminist scholars explore ways to balance awareness of the state and an understanding of Palestinians as diverse, active, creative and strategizing.

The workshop is co-sponsored by the ISERP workshop on Gender and the Global Locations of Liberalism, MEALAC, and the Middle East Institute.

If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to irwag@columbia.edu or 212.854.3277. Space is limited.
