International Students and Scholars Office

Columbia University, continuing its tradition as a preeminent world center of learning, welcomes more than 10,000 students, interns, scholars and accompanying family members from over 150 countries and offers its international clientele an array of services through the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO).

The ISSO Advisory Staff

ISSO staff assist international students and scholars with their questions about regulatory and immigration document issues and University policies and practices as they pertain to immigration status.

Visiting Scholar and Scientist Program

Acting on behalf of the Office of the Provost and Dean of Faculties, the ISSO administers the designation of visiting scholars and scientists and provides services supporting and promoting international educational exchange.

Immigration and Document Service

The ISSO administers immigration services for Columbia University's international students and faculty, researchers, and visiting scholars. Advisory staff are available to help students and scholars obtain and maintain their immigration status so that immigration issues remain routine and secondary, and they are able to devote their full energies to their scholarly goals. The ISSO monitors regulations affecting relevant immigration classifications and broadcasts timely alerts and updates to students (ISSOnews) and scholars (SCHOLARnews). Detailed information on immigration procedures and benefits is available at the ISSO and maintained on the ISSO Web at www.columbia.edu/cu/isso.

International Student and Scholar Orientation

The ISSO offers orientation programs in which members of our international community have the opportunity to meet and receive informational briefings. Orientation sessions are provided throughout the academic year for visiting scholars and faculty. International students haved an immigration information session as part of their school's or department's new student orientation.

Informational Programs and Workshops

The ISSO offers an annual series of informational workshops on international taxation, presented by certified public accountants, and on employment-based immigration status options after student status, presented by nationally recognized attorneys.
