Columbia University provides opportunities for the study of numerous foreign languages and regional areas at both the undergraduate and the graduate level, including some languages not available at any other institution in the United States. The University's American Language Program is one of the oldest English as a second language programs in the United States. Columbia's Study Away programs offer opportunities to study in China, France, Italy, Germany, and Japan.
Language and Regional Studies at Columbia University
Columbia offers classes in over 40 foreign languages during the academic year. The School of Continuing Education makes many of these courses available to nondegree students who wish to study a foreign language exclusively. Students may enroll in elementary- or intermediate-level classes on a credit or noncredit basis.
