A survey of representative films from the Neorealist Period to the 1980s. Screening of films by Rosellini, De Sica, Visconti, Fellini, Antonioni, Bertolucci, and other major directors.
ITALIAN THEATER PRACTICUM (3 pts.) -- V3650
Students study and discuss in depth a major Italian play that they will collectively perform at the conclusion of the semester. Particular attention to grammar, pronunciation, meaning of the play, character exploration, and acting techniques. All classes and conversations are conducted in Italian.
Course may be repeated for credit; may be counted once toward the major or concentration. Content varies. Additional hours to be arranged. Instructor’s permission required.
19-20C ITALIAN EPISTOLARY NOVELS (3pts.) -- W4258
(In Italian) Focuses on novels written in epistolary form, studying the properties and functionality of the letter within the literary text. Special attention is given to the interrelation between literary production and historical events as well as cultural practices.
ITALIAN CULTURAL STUDIES II: FROM WORLD WAR I TO PRESENT (3pts.) -- W4503
An interdisciplinary study of Italian culture from World War I to the present. Readings will be drawn from historical works and other social science disciplines plus fictional and narrative sources. Lectures will be in English, a reading knowledge of Italian is recommended but not required. The readings in Italian are an optional alternative for students with Italian.
