We at CUBJJ aim to provide excellent, experienced, and dedicated instruction and training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu; to provide a safe and fun environment where members can learn and practice without fear of intimidation or bodily harm; to provide an opportunity for members to challenge and enjoy themselves; and to challenge members and help them improve their skills with each and every practice.

Constitution of Columbia University Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club

Article I. Purposes
The purpose of this organization shall be:
To provide excellent, experienced, and dedicated instruction and training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu; to provide a safe and fun environment where members can learn and practice without fear of intimidation or bodily harm; to provide an opportunity for members to challenge and enjoy themselves; and to challenge members and help them improve their skills with each and every practice.
Article II. Membership
Section 1. CUBJJ does not discriminate based on race, gender, age, sexual orientation, ability, or weight.
Section 2. In order to be recognized as a full member, members must pay the club dues in full (i.e. $70), must regularly attend practices, and must abide by club guidelines of hygiene, courtesy, and respect. All members must have a valid Dodge Fitness Center membership, sign a Columbia waiver and a CUBJJ Officer waiver, pay the class fee in full, and be added to the CUBJJ insurance roster (an additional $10 fee *may* apply).
Section 3. Every full member has the right to attend class, receive instruction, practice with other members, and represent Columbia at meets and tournaments.
Article III. Membership
Section 1. Classes will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-11 pm and practice will be held on Saturdays from 4-6 pm unless otherwise notified.
Article IV. Officers
Section 1. The Executive Board will consist of one President, one Vice-President, one Secretary, one Treasurer, and any additional officers as needed.
President: Elizabeth Smith
Vice President: Christopher Lum
Secretary: Derek Seehausen
Duties: Advertising for club, running practice, organizing meets, generating ideas, other administrative duties.
Treasurer: Nicholas Tenev.
Duties: Collecting and managing dues; managing all other income and expenditures of club, generating ideas, updating website.
Social Chair: Avi Tropper
Publicity Chair: Joshua Banker
Section 2. The board and the instructor have the final decision in all club matters. At the end of a board member’s term, determined either by resignation or graduation, all club members interested in taking his place come forward. A process of mutual discussion will informally decide the matter, of course taking into account all sides’ opinions.
Section 3. In order to hold office, a member must have been a full member for at least one year, and must demonstrate dedication and genuine interest.
Section 4. There shall be four executive officers, but there may be as many additional officers as necessary.
Article V. Funds
Club funds shall be used to pay our instructor, subsidize members’ competition fees, and pay for other club necessities at the discretion of the treasurer.
Article VI. Affiliations
Section 1. We are affiliated with our mother academy, the Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu academy, and with the Thai boxing club at Columbia.
Article VII. Coach/Manager
Our current coach and instructor is Jason T. Yang, and he will remain in his position until he chooses to resign. At that point, he will be responsible for assisting the club in finding a new instructor, who will also be affiliated with a Gracie school, and who will be competent and caring.
Article VIII. Ratification
The constitution will be read by all members, and if 2/3 of the members have no objection, it will be considered ratified.
Article IX. Amendments
Amendments will be presented to the board by any member wishing to do so, and ratified in the same way as the constitution.
