From man notes, I believe that this is the proper address to send a notesfile request. I have started a mailing list called the Columbia Jewish Electronic Calendar. This list is to be for short announcements only, not a forum for discussion. Nevertheless, several people have requested that I post articles which would generate such discussion. I believe it would be more appropriate to set up a notes file for that purpose. Could you please create a notes file called jewish. I appreciate any comments you might have about this. Thank you very much, Meir Green, Coordinator Columbia Jewish Electronic Calendar > Regarding the proposed notesfile "jewish"-- sounds interesting but > I'm not clear on a few things. > > So who is behind this? Is "Columbia Jewish Electronic Calendar" just > something you made up or is this a recognized student activity? CJEC is something I made up :-) with the backing of the JSU. I will be picking up the official JSU announcements from them once per week, starting this Thursday, and making them available to the list. They wanted to be sure that they wouldn't have to reply to *any* email, so they are not even getting an account. I wanted to make the information available, even to people who have accounts on non-cunix machines. I guess this sort of rules out a notes file alone. Also, since I do not work for the JSU, it is politically possible for me to announce non-JSU supported events on the list. I think it would be appropriate to post, at the very least, the official JSU events on Columbianet. > For the announcements, maybe Columbianet is better than a mailing > list? Could be less work for you, for one thing. Mailing lists take > a lot of maintenance. Perhaps! I would certainly like to put the information into Columbianet. However a notesfile or list is appropriate for breaking announcements, so students won't have to constantly check ColumbiaNet! Also, sometimes people may not be able to telnet to Columbianet, but will have access to mail. I wanted a "Jewish" notesfile because the CJEC is for short announcements only, and is not the place for discussion! I already have people sending me articles which I must reject by telling them that Columbia doesn't have a good place for them, although there are Jewish lists at other schools. I thought a notesfile would be appropriate for this, since lists already exist at other schools, but Columbia has such a large Jewish population, that I think it would be useful to generate some *internal* discussion. And then there would be a place for all the local Jewish discussion which doesn't belong on the low-volume Calendar. Thank you for your suggestions. I would appreciate additional advice, especially help you can give me regarding appropriateness for one type of service versus another, and how to go about getting them set up. > Joseph Brennan Academic Information Systems Thank you very much. The first Jewish Electronic Calendar comes out tonight, and I will advise people of the new notesfile. When I picked up the announcements at the Jewish Student Union, they (Donna) told me that they *would* like to put some material into Columbianet. Could you please explain how to go about this. There are two types of material, the calendar of events, which is duplicated by the mailing list to some extent, and lists of JSU clubs, local Kosher eateries, and synagogues, which she said they already have in electronic form. Thank you very much for all your help. Again, I welcome suggestions.
