    SHABBAT ANNOUNCEMENTS -- SEPTEMBER 6TH

    Shabbat announcements can be heard at services and also read by email. Scott Susser s in charge of the JSU email list. If you do not receive the weekly electronic calendar, please contact Scott or the Jewish office Monday morning. The Jewish Office Web p age is administered by both Scott Susser and David Shach. If your JSU group has information to be added to the web page, talk Scott, David, or the Jewish Office.

    Shabbat announcements must be submitted to the Jewish office by 3:30 on Thursdays.

    Shabbat dinner is at 8:30 followed by an Oneg in John Jay Lounge at 10:15 which will feature YOU. It’s Open Mic night without the microphones.

    Koach has Shabbat Morning Services this week.

    Yavneh will be meeting as a group at the Columbia Gates, 9am to walk to Old B’Way Synagogue.

    Rabbi Sheer will be giving a special class Shabbat afternoon about Rabbi Soloveitchik’s approach to the Rosh Hashannah liturgy. It will be one hour before mincha in Earl Hall at 5:30.

    This Sunday from 1-3p.m. is the JSU fair and Barbeque on Lewisohn lawn. Come sign up our JSU groups and enjoy a delicious Barbeque!

    Every Monday night Israeli Folk Dancing takes place in Earl Hall Auditorium from 7:30 to 11:00. Instructional dancing is 7:30-8:30 and open dancing is from 8:30-11:00. The cost is $3 with CUID.

    Come to the Jewish office to purchase mezuzot, pick up a free Jewish calendar, pick up your JSU Shabbat calendar listing services this semester, and to get tickets and information about High Holy Day Services.

    Contact Adam Kaye to help him put up the campus Sukkah which is on the Barnard Campus.

    Tommorow night, Saturday night, the very first Selichot are said. These are special penetential prayers recited during the High Holy Day season.

    Koach services are at JTS at Midnight

    Yavneh will meet at the Columbia gates at 116th and Broadway at midnight to walk to 125th and Broadway to the Old Bdwy Synagogue for 12:30 services.

    The Wednesday Night Learning Program will begin this Wednesday night from 8:30-9:30 in the Earl Hall Auditorium. Come join hundreds of Jews from all different backgrounds and learn about any aspect of Judaism that interests you. Contact Beth Samuels of A liza Hakimian for more information or just show up!

    The JSU’s Social Action Committee plans community service programs. Want to join the Vaad (committee)? Contact Mark Popovsky via the Jewish office.

    If anyoneis interested in playing intramural sports they shoud sign up by Wednesday in the

    Jewish office or contact Barak Zahavy. The JSU teams are: Flag football, Soccer, Volleyball, or Basketball.

    On Sunday at 8:15 p.m., the Beit Midrash will be introducing its various shiurim, classes, and other programs to all who are interested. The Beit Midrash is located on the upper floor of Earl Hall. People can sign up for the shiurim on the door of the Be it Midrash.

    There are boxes of personal sepharim, religious books, in the Beit Midrash. Please claim them this week or they will become public domain or sent to Jewish burial.

    Bat Kol, Columbia’s only Jewish women’s a capella group, will be holding auditions this week on Monday, September 9th and Tuesday, September 10th, at 8 p.m. in music room #003 of Sulzberger hall. For more information, contact Yael Oppenheim or Robyn Puro .

    Don’t miss your last chance to try out for Pizmon -- Columbia, Barnard and JTS’s Jewish a cappella group. Auditions will be from 6-10:00 in Mathilde Schechter Residence Hall at 415 West 120th St. between Amsterdam and Morningside. We are looking for all parts.

    Perspectives, the JSU’s magazine will meet on Tuesday at 9 p.m. in the Dodge room of Earl Hall. Perspectives prints well thought-out articles, short - stories, and poems about any Jewish related issue. Perspectives welcomes people interested in writing, editing, selling advertisements, and working on layout and graphic design. Speak to Evan Hochberg for details.

    Yavneh will be holding a learners service on Rosh Hashanna and Yom Kippur. If you wish to attend of help with the services contact the Jewish Office or Robyn Puro or Hetty Harlow.

    We are pleased to announce that there is now kosher pizza in Hewitt dining room. Rabbi Sheer supervises that section only, not the pizza in MacIntosh.

    Afternoon services are as follows:

    Koach: 6:30 in the Shiff room.

    Yavneh: 6:35 in the Dodge room.

    They will be followed by Seudah Shelishit, the third Sabbath meal, to take place in the Dodge room of Earl Hall.
