    Shabbat Announcements 5/9/97

    Rabbi Sheer will be giving a class " Is It a Mitzvah (Commandment) To Live In Israel?" this Saturday. This class will follow the morning Yavneh service.

    Sunday evening, May 11th is Yom Hazkaron-Israel's Memorial Day. Meet for a Kumzitz at 7:00 p.m. on Lewison lawn.

    It's Yom Ha'atzmaut Israeli-Style! Join the JSU for a celebration of Israel's 49th birthday 5:30-7:30 Monday, May 12th on the Math lawn. Break from finals for BBQ, Boppers and Israeli dancing!

    Iggrot Ha'Ari, the Columbia Journal of Jewish Scholarship, is soliciting papers on any topic relating to Jewish studies. Submission guidelines are in the Jewish Office. The deadline is Friday, May 16 by noon. Papers should be left in the Journal's box in the Jewish office.

    We are also looking staff members for next year: business managers, computer editors and copy editors. Interested people please contact Andrea Siegel (als40) or Tali Rosenblatt (tr59).

    The Yiddish Club is pleased to announce the release of Uptown Klezmer's CD "Ashnelerando". To purchase a copy for only $10, contact Sarah Benor (seb28) or look for CD sales on the steps next week.

    This past week, many of us gathered to say farewell to Rabbi Susan Oren who has been our Associate Chaplain for the past five years. We thank her once again for her leadership and service and wish her the best of luck in the future. In the Jewish Office i s a tribute book, which will be presented to her. You are invited to come into the Jewish Office to inscribe your best wishes in this book.

    We would like to announce that a successor for Rabbi Oren has recently been appointed, Rabbi Jennie Rosenn. Rabbi Rosenn is a graduate of Columbia College class of 1991, and during that time was one of the leaders of our J.C. She was a Wexner Fellow during her seminary studies and spent a year in Israel at the Pardes Institute. She will receive her ordination from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion this May. We look forward to greeting her and working with her in the coming year.

    The Jewish Office Staff and the leaders of the Jewish Student Union wish all of our graduating seniors a hearty mazel tov upon your graduation. You have enriched our community and we hope you will stay in touch in the future.
