Women's T'fillah

Public prayer is the backbone of daily communal ritual and a powerful religious experience. While all Jews are required to pray, according to traditional halakhah, there are varying degrees of obligation.

Halakhah dictates that certain prayers, the devarim shebiqdusha, can only be said with a minyan. A traditional minyan requires the presence of ten men and only men can actively participate in the service.

Women's T'fillah was created to open the experience of participatory group prayer to women while remaining within the structure of halakhah. As such, our service is modeled on the paradigm of traditional communal prayer with certain differences.

The Women's T'fillah of Columbia University is not affiliated with any denomination, and our constituents have diverse backgrounds, goals and beliefs.

This website is home to just a small amount of information about our group. You can see an outline of our morning services, our Fall 1998 meeting times, and a brief Glossary of Terms. We hope you find this information useful and welcome your feedback.
