Bar'khu - literally, bless; first prayer of the Shema section, of the the Devarim

berakhah - blessing
Birkot Ha-Shahar - morning blessings
devarim shebiqdushah - literally, holy words; prayers which are only said in the
presence of a minyan: Kadesh, Kedushah, Barchu, the repetition of the Shemoneh
Esreh, Birkat Kohanim and "public" Torah and Haftarah reading.
gabba'it - organizer of the sercie and overseer of the Torah reading
gelilah - wrapping the Torah in its belt covering
hagbah - lifting the Torah
halakhah - Jewish law
hazanit - prayer leader
kahal - congregation
Kedushah - literally, holiness; prayer inserted in the re ader's repetition of the
Shemoneh Esreh
"lamdeini huqekha" -
'Blessed are you, G-d, teach me your ways." (Psalms 119:12).
We use this as an alternative to the berakhah for the aliyah as it is associated
with Torah reading in the Talmud
minyan - literally, quorum; ten men required to make a group "public" according
to traditional Jewish law
Mishebeirakh - literally, One who is blessed; blessing for well being.
Mizmor Shir - the introductory psalm to Pesukei DeZimra
Modim DeRabanan - kahal's addition to the repetition of the
Shemoneh Esreh
Olah - literally, she who ascends; woman called up to the Torah
Pesukei DeZimra - section of the service consisting of selected psalms
rashei hodesh - plural of rosh hodesh, beginning of new month
Shaharit - morning service
Shema' - literally, hear; a quintessential element of the service declaring
acceptance of G-d's sovereignty
Shemoneh 'Esreh - literally, eighteen; the central prayer of the service, consisting
of praise, supplication and thanks
t'fillah - prayer
tzedakah - literally, justice or righteousness; charity
Yishtabah - literally, praised be; prayer which concludes Pesukei
