This week’s Dvar Torah will be given by Barnard freshman and color war extraordinaire Yael Steiner.

This week Shiur by Your Peers will be given by Hu Nose on the topic of “Bi Tzmi” on the fourth floor of the Kraft Center ˝ hour before Shabbat Mincha. We apologize for the title of last week’s Shiur by Your Peers which was improperly titled “Is it a mitzvah to speak Hebrew?”. It was actually supposed to be titled, “Why Evan Schutzman thinks you should speak Hebrew.” Again, we apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

Kiddush this Shabbos is sponsored by Café Nana in honor of its grand opening on the 2nd floor of the Kraft Center. Yasher Koach to everyone who made it happen. Mazal Tov! Kiddush this week and every week is no longer sponsored in part by the Kiddush Fund made possible by a generous alumni donation. This is because we no longer have that alumni donation. In light of this, we ask that you sponsor Kiddush more often and/or ask any alumni you may know to create a new Kiddush fund via a generous alumni donation much like the previous one so that we can all enjoy our weekly post-prayer snacks.

Yavneh will also be having its first TISCH of the semester this Friday night. Daniel Friedman promises a good time. Rav Hefter of Midreshet Lindenbaum and the Bat Ayin Yeshiva will be visiting our community this shabbos and speaking both at this tisch and following davening Shabbos morning.

There won't be any Bikkur Cholim this week, but feel free to go and visit the sick on your own. Stay tuned, Bikkur Cholim will resume next week: we'll start a new and very exciting project with the Jewish Home (further information in a later email). If you are interested in being on the Bikkur Cholim mailing list, please, email sea2113@columbia.edu with your name!

Well, do we have the event for you! This Sunday on the 2nd floor of the Kraft Center, there will be a Hillel-wide Super Bowl party at 6pm complete with free Dougie’s BBQ wings and awesome people. Don’t miss it!

-------------------------------------------------

d) Yavneh cookbook/Fairway shuttle

We want your recipes!

Yavneh will be producing a community cook book and we need your help. E-mail Gaby Rothberger your favorite recipe (or more than one if you have) for anything: kugel, chicken, dessert, cranberry crizzle, etc. It's Shabbos Made Easy and it'll be awesome.

Gaby's e-mail address is glr2102@columbia.edu
Anyone who is interested in helping out – please e-mail her as well.

Anyone interested in purchasing food for Shabbos at Fairway and wants free transportation, please email Gaby as well so that we can get a shuttle to go there and back on Friday mornings. We need a minimum of 10 to take advantage of this great deal so please tell your friends!

i) Factoid of the Week!

This week’s factoid is about The Incredible Falk.

Aryeh Falk-criminal? klutz? kleptomaniac? Yes, yes and yes. Let me explain: In 5th grade, Aryeh Falk was detained by a police officer for grabbing his gun. He also once dropped a Snapple bottle off a rooftop and almost hit somebody. At one point, he was running track in school and ran head on into a parked car. Although covered in blood from head to toe, his love for Nach took over and he still showed up to class until he was forced to wash himself off and go to the nurse. Many of his classmates can still see this heroic vision of a bloody Falk. As for his tendencies as a kleptomaniac, during NSOP orientation freshman year on Mathematics lawn with NSOP coordinator Allison Sturm, he revealed to his suitemates (Daniel Fridman, Jeffrey Feder, and Eric Bondarsky) that he had an uncontrollable tendency to steal other people’s shampoo.

Not only can Falk walk the walk—he can talk the talk. Here are some famous Aryeh Falk quotes and quips: He “strongly, strongly objects” to the use of BBQ sauce on hot dogs when made on a Foreman Grill. When asked what his reaction would be to a great rabbi punching him in the face he responded he would punch him right back because “he is no longer a great rabbi once he punches me in the face.” At a recent shabbat meal, a certain girl was using a fork for her onion rings while Aryeh was insisting she use her hands. Needless to say, she proceeded to drop one on his pants and he responded, “I’m more infuriated by the cause than by the effect.” Finally, this past winter break while skiing in Utah, there were some Mormon missionaries trying to convert Aryeh and he responded, “You’ll have better luck after I’m dead.” I think there were some Mormons found dead nearby with broken Snapple bottles nearby and a big lump on each of their foreheads...

j) Joke of the Week

An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house, and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen.
The two elderly gentlemen were talking, and one said, "Last night we went out to a new restaurant, and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly."
The other man said, "What's the name of the restaurant?"
The first man knits his brow in obvious concentration, and finally said to his companion, "Aahh, What is the name of that red flower you give to someone you love?"
His friends replies, "A carnation??"
"No. No. The other one," the man says.
His friend offers another suggestion, "The poppy?"
"Nahhhh," growls the man. "You know the one that is red and has thorns."
His friend said, "Do you mean a rose?"
"Yes, Yes that's it. Thank you!" the first man says. He then turns toward the kitchen and yells, "Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?"

OK, that’s it for this week. Have a SUPER shabbos!
