This week’s Dvar Torah will be given by SEAS Senior Barry Wohl. He would like everyone to know that the Vancouver Canucks are currently in 5th in the Western Conference and only 2 points out of 1st in their division. He also promises to buy everyone Stanley Cup tickets in General Motors Place.

There will be no Shiur by your Peers this week but luckily Rabbi Almog will be giving a shiur after Kiddush (see below) to quench your weekly shiur thirst.

Kiddush this Shabbos is sponsored by Café Nana in honor of its grand opening on the 2nd floor of the Kraft Center. There will be special Café Nana food. Kiddush this week and every week is no longer sponsored in part by the Kiddush Fund made possible by a generous alumni donation. This is because we no longer have that alumni donation. In light of this, we ask that you sponsor Kiddush more often and/or ask any alumni you may know to create a new Kiddush fund via a generous alumni donation much like the previous one so that we can all enjoy our weekly post-prayer snacks.

Rabbi David Almog will be giving a shiur after Kiddush this week on the topic of “Tu B'shvat and the Minhag of eating fruit.”

Bikkur Cholim will meet at 3:15pm at the gates of 116th and Amsterdam to go to the Jewish Home on 106th street between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues. The Jewish Home is giving us a unit where we’ll be able to organize Shabbat activities with the elders. For our first visit this Shabbat, the program will be the following: Judith Edelstein (the directors of religious life) will first introduce herself and welcome us to the Jewish Home. Then, we’ll all introduce ourselves individually and so will the people of the Jewish Home. After that, if someone would be willing to volunteer for a short and simple Dvar Torah, it would be great!!!! (if so, please email sea2113@columbia.edu so that you can get a few tips regarding what kind of Dvar Torah would be nice). Finally, we’ll end with a song of Shabbat. If you are interested in being on the Bikkur Cholim mailing list, please, email sea2113@columbia.edu with your name!

b) Yavneh & Koach are going to Lazer Park!!!

Ever wondered what Dr. Evil was talking about when he mentioned a giant “laser?” Well, Yavneh and Koach are about to find out this Saturday Night as we go to Times Square for some laser tag! The cost will be approximately $20 and we will arrive at Lazer Park between 8 and 8:30pm.

c) Yavneh Think Tank

…or is it Tink Thank? Think Tank will meet this upcoming Wednesday night, February 15th at 10pm (right after WNLP). If you are interested in expressing your thoughts, ideas, concerns, or anything else regarding Yavneh in an open forum, this is the right place for you. This is a great way for you to have a great impact on our community, and a medium through which you can implement your ideas for Yavneh.

-------------------------------------------------

d) Yavneh Cookbook

Mmmmm, Noodle Soup...

Yavneh will be producing a community cook book and we need your help. E-mail Gaby Rothberger your favorite recipe (or more than one if you have) for anything: kugel, soup, strawberry rhubarb pie, etc. It's Shabbos Made Easy and it'll be awesome.

Gaby's e-mail address is glr2102@columbia.edu
Anyone who is interested in helping out – please e-mail her as well.

e) Genetic Disease Program

***100% of Ashkenazi Jews are carriers for a genetic disease***
***95% of affected families have no previous family history***
Yavneh is proud to bring a program on the PREVENTION OF JEWISH GENETIC DISEASES, an important issue for ANY Jew of Ashkenazi descent to learn about. Spread the word and save the date - TUESDAY FEB 21, 8 PM.

f) Yachad Shabbaton

The annual Yachad Shabbaton this year will be taking place on the shabbos of March 3-4. If you are interested in being an advisor for that shabbos or have an empty bed for our visitors or have any further questions about the shabbaton, please contact Taryn at ts2133@barnard.edu.

-------------------------------------------------

g) OCC Website

Remember when we had the OCC Shabbaton? Well, now they have a website! Visit their website at http://www.columbia.edu/cu/jsu/yavneh/occ/ where there is a forum where members of different Orthodox campus communities can post and discuss events, rides, aliyah, and Modern Orthodoxy. Check it out!

-------------------------------------------------

h) Penn Shabbaton

Everyone (especially Yeshivat Har Etzion alumni) is invited to a shabbaton at the University of Pennsylvania on March 18, when they will be joined by Rav Moshe Lichtenstein. Please contact Yoni Levinson (yolevins@sas.upenn.edu) if you are interested in coming or if you have further questions. There's a cost for meals (~$30), but spending shabbat with Rav Moshe is priceless.

i) Factoid of the Week!

This week’s factoid features JTS Sophomore Ben Waldman.

Ben has a strange fascination with children’s entertainment. He can often be spotted wearing his favorite Dr. Seuss “One Fish Two Fish” tie. Despite community pressure to buy a “Green Eggs and Ham” tie, he refuses to do so and stands by his decision on which is the best Dr. Seuss book. While a seemingly calm individual, there have been rumors that Ben may have an anger management problem. One shabbos dinner a few years back, when his baby sister was seated comfortably in a baby seat, Ben knocked her off the table, crashing down to the floor--sending her to the ER. He was also an active member of the gun club at the Frisch school. Despite these details, Ben still maintains his reputation as a leader and pioneer. Often leading Friday Mincha, Mr. Waldman also starts fashion trends. In high school, he insisted on buttoning the top button on his collared shirts which led to the rest of his classmates plotting to cut off all the top buttons on all of his shirts. Somehow, they were not successful. I wonder if the gun club had anything to do with that...

j) Joke of the Week

A nice Jewish girl brings home her fiancé to meet her parents. After dinner, her mother tells her father to find out about the young man. He invites the fiancé to his study for schnapps.
"So what are your plans?" the father asks the fiancé.
"I am a Torah scholar," he replies.
"A Torah scholar." the father says. "Admirable, but what will you do to provide a nice house for my daughter to live in, as she's accustomed to?"
"I will study," the young man replies, "and God will provide for us."
"And how will you buy her a beautiful engagement ring, such as she deserves?" asks the father.
"I will concentrate on my studies," the young man replies, "God will provide for us."
"And children?" asks the father. "How will you support children?"
"Don't worry, sir, God will provide," replies the fiancé.
The conversation proceeds like this, and each time the father questions, the fiancé insists that God will provide.
Later, the mother asks, "So, nu? How did it go?"
The father answers, "He has no job and no plans, but the good news is he thinks I'm God."

-------------------------------------------------

That does it for us. Have a great Shabbos!

Jeremy, Taryn, Shira, Gaby, and Eric
