Kiddush this Shabbos is sponsored by friends of Jon Lauer and Shari Gross in honor of their first shabbos in Columbia since their engagement. Kiddush this week and every week is no longer sponsored in part by the Kiddush Fund made possible by a generous alumni donation. This is because we no longer have that alumni donation. In light of this, we ask that you sponsor Kiddush more often and/or ask any alumni you may know to create a new Kiddush fund via a generous alumni donation much like the previous one so that we can all enjoy our weekly post-prayer snacks.

Bikkur Cholim will meet this week at 3:30pm at the gates of 116th street and Amsterdam, in order to be at the Jewish Home around 3:45. Be there! If you are interested in being on the Bikkur Cholim mailing list, please, email sea2113@columbia.edu with your name.

b) Yavneh & Koach went to Lazer Park!!!

Yavneh and Koach found out what Dr. Evil was talking about when he mentioned a giant “laser.” The teams were supposed to pit Jeffrey Feder (rhymes with better) against Alan Feder (rhymes with later). The stipulation was that the loser would change the pronunciation of his last name to the opposite pronunciation. However, due to some technical difficulties, Lazer Park put them on the same team. Since that team lost 4 out of the 5 games played, they will both have their pronunciation changed for the next 2 weeks. Please refer to them as such or you will not be invited to the special screening of “Feder on the Roof.” Special congrats to Shira Irwin and Chuck Rosenberg on having the most high scores on their respective teams.

You don't win friends with salad!

But you can contribute to the Yavneh cookbook with your salad recipe. E-mail Gaby Rothberger your favorite recipe (or more than one if you have) for anything: chummus, soup, challah, chicken, etc. It's Shabbos Made Easy and it'll be awesome.

Gaby's e-mail address is glr2102@columbia.edu
Anyone who is interested in helping out – please e-mail her as well.

j) Factoid of the Week!

This week’s factoid features Barnard Senior Yocheved Schwartz.

Now, I know what you’re thinking the first time you see the name Yocheved Schwartz: How the heck do non-Jews pronounce that name? Good question. Her African dance teacher, unable to pronounce her name, called her Yasheev'd. In response to the comment, "Your name is a mispronunciation waiting to happen," Yocheved responded, "It didn't wait very long."

As an out-of-towner, Yocheved has really embraced Manhattan life. Specifically the subway system. She is a big believer in not sitting down in a seat on a non-empty subway due solely to feelings of guilt. She is also against holding the poles on the subway because they don’t meet her hygienic standards. I guess she doesn’t want to soil them with her dirty hands. She has also taken a liking to the rats which often call the subway their home. Although she tortures them on a daily basis in the lab, she has clearly shown her desire to emulate them based on her costume last Purim. She dressed up as a rat in a maze and taped a small plush rat to her shoulder. Stay tuned to see what she comes up with for this Purim...

k) Joke of the Week

Six Jewish men were playing poker in the Condo clubhouse when Meyer loses $500 on a single hand, clutches his chest and drops dead at the table. Showing respect for their fallen comrade, the other five complete their playing time standing up. Finkelstein looks around and asks "Now, who is going to tell his wife?" They draw straws. Goldberg, who is always the loser, picks the short one. They tell him to be discreet, be gentle, don't make a bad situation any worse than it is.

"Gentlemen! Discreet? I'm the most discreet mensch you will ever meet. Discretion is my middle name, leave it to me."

Goldberg schleps over to the Meyer's apartment, knocks on the door, the wife answers, asks what he wants.

Goldberg declares "Your husband just lost $500, and is afraid to come home."

She hollers, "TELL HIM HE SHOULD DROP DEAD!"

Goldberg says, "I'll tell him."

-------------------------------------------------

That’s all folks! Good Shabbos!

Jeremy, Taryn, Shira, Gaby, and Eric
