f) OLDEST LIVING HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR SPEAKING TODAY

Unbroken Will: Leopold Engleitner, Holocaust Survivor
4:00 PM in 1501 IAB

Born in 1905 in Salzburg, Mr. Engleitner became a Jehovah's Witness in his late twenties. In 1938, when Austria was annexed into the Nazi Reich, Mr. Engleitner was frequently imprisoned for “promoting an unacceptable religious faction” and spent the next five years in three different concentration camps. He was subjected to severe physical labor and demeaning treatment from both his SS guards and his fellow prisoners. Throughout his internment, Mr. Engleitner was offered freedom in return for signing a declaration renouncing his beliefs. Time and time again, he refused. Finally, in exchange for agreeing to work solely in agriculture for the remainder of his life, he was released from the Ravensbreck concentration camp on July 15, 1943.

Since 1999, Mr. Engleitner has been speaking to groups at universities, schools, and holocaust memorial sites. He has been instrumental in furthering the teaching of Holocaust and Nazi atrocities around the world.

g) DEVELOP A TANACH PROGRAM WITH A BARNARD ALUM

My name is Atara Newberger, and I am currently working on developing a program via the Drisha Institute that, I believe, will strongly appeal to those who are either teaching Tanach, or are interested in serious Tanach scholarship. My wish is to develop an intensive Tanach program at Drisha that would serve to help day school educators become proficient in content material that is stimulating for their own self-growth and is also applicable to a modern orthodox educational setting. The program would be built upon the literary and thematic style of studying Tanach that has been pioneered by teachers such as Rabbi Menachem Leibtag and Shani Taragin. It would meet either two or three times a week, for a couple of hours each time.

(Please email Atara at ataran25@aol.com if you are interested or have any questions)

h) JEWISH DIALOGUE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Are you interested in fostering dialogue within the Jewish community about the Israel-Palestinian conflict? If so, the Jewish Dialogue Fellowship program is great for you. The program will meet next semesters every other week for a few hours each time, and participants will receive a $200 stipend. If you are interested in applying, email ari@jewishdialogue.org (the application due date is this SUNDAY). Any questions? Email Jeremy at job2101@columbia.edu.

Shabbat Shalom and good luck on finals!
