Welcome to the OCC

This is a beginning - the inauguration of an organization, the OCC,
founded in February 2005 over a shabbat in NYU. The presidents of
Penn, Columbia, Brandeis, NYU, Maryland, and Cornell Orthodox
communities were all in attendance. We decided then and there to
work towards two "long-term" goals. The first of these goals was an
intercampus shabbaton, which took place on November 12th 2005, and
included the first-ever survey of orthodox life on secular college
campuses. The second goal was this very website, a virtual locus
for inter-campus activity and communication.
The goals of the OCC are as follows:
To promote communication and networking among leaders of various
Orthodox campus communities with the purpose of sharing ideas.
To facilitate inter-campus social programming: this is an area in
which few achievements have been made, despite the existence of
8-12 viable Orthodox campus communities. With an inter-campus
organization composed of the elected community leaders, this
promise can become a reality.
To promote and facilitate dialogue, communication, and discussion
concerning issues of supreme relevance for our communities. We know
that students have a lot to say about their chosen religious
lifestyles and community structures, and our goal is to enable our
members' voices to be heard. These voices deserve a forum not only
on campus, but within the general framework of American Modern
Orthodoxy as well. The OCC, with established lines of communication
between campuses, and with a new online forum linked to this
website, will be in the position to enable such an expression.
