Sifu Vingrove A. Thomas has studied several Chinese martial arts. In the early 1970s he began training in the Fu Jow Pai system headed by Wai Hong. He later helped to establish a martial arts club at New York City Community College, where he served as an assistant instructor.

In 1974 Sifu Thomas chose to devote his training to Wing Chun Kuen under Sifu Lee Moy Shan. In 1986 he opened his own school, the Ving Tsun Kung Fu Institute. Having studied Chen-style Taijiquan and Xinyi Liuhequan with Master George Xu since the mid-1980s, he started teaching these arts in the early 90s.

In 1996 Sifu Thomas founded the Six Harmony Martial Arts Academy. Over the years his students have earned top rankings at numerous local and national competitions in solo forms; bare hand and weapons sparring; Sticking Hands (Wing Chun); and Pushing Hands (Taiji).

He serves regularly as a judge at the annual U.S. National Chinese Martial Arts Competitions, for which he has established rules for the Sticking Hands matches. He has also participated in masters exhibitions held there and in Hong Kong and Mainland China.

A certified instructor and member of the Ving Tsun Athletic Association based in Hong Kong, Sifu Thomas offers instruction at the Six Harmony Academy. He was the primary instructor of the Columbia University Kung Fu Club from 1991 to 1998.
