Distinguished Alumna Recipient, 2006 Ms. Luisa Cabal Director, International Legal Program Center for Reproductive Rights As the Director of the International Legal Program at the Center for Reproductive Rights, Ms. Cabal leads the Center’s legal advocacy efforts in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. In her eight years at the Center, she has pioneered the Center’s first international litigation efforts, filing cases before the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights and the United Nations Human Rights Committee. She also designed and co-coordinated the first comparative study in Latin America on women’s rights jurisprudence of the region’s highest-level courts. She developed lawyer-training projects, whose graduates continue to work on reproductive rights in countries such as Ecuador, México, Perú and Colombia. She was co-founder of the first network of Latin American law professors (RED ALAS) who are integrating a gender perspective and women’s rights into law school curricula in the region. She has lectured in over 20 countries and has published articles and books on international human rights law and gender justice. Prior to joining the Center in 1998, Ms. Cabal was a foreign associate in the Latin American Practice Group at Gibson, Dunn, and Crutcher, LLP. In addition, she served as a Consultant to the United Nations Development Program in Colombia, and as Advisor to the Government of Colombia. Ms. Cabal graduated with honors from the Universidad de los Andes in Colombia; she received her Master of Laws from the Columbia University School of Law. |
