New York City

There is not a better city in the country to host this year's symposium on international law. New York is home to the world's most influential political bodies, largest capital markets and most sophisticated international law practices. New York is also a fantastic place to visit. The city is extremely safe, is now the safest large city in America. Public transit is very convenient and makes the entire island accessible from wherever you decide to stay.

The city can be overwhelming, so we want to make sure that all our visitors get the information they need to tour the island successfully. From the navigation bar on the left you can access information on traveling to the city and finding hotels and hostels. Below you will also find places to eat and socialize at the end of the days' activities. We hope you will take advantage of everything the city has to offer while you're attending the symposium. Feel free to contact the Symposium's Hospitality Chair, Rachel Perez (rep2102@columbia.edu), with any questions.

Entertainment in New York

The Upper West Side of Manhattan is home to many fun nightspots for conference attendants to check out after the conference events end. One of the most exciting areas of the city is on Amsterdam Avenue, between 80th and 82nd Streets, accessible by both subway and taxi. There you will find multiple bars and clubs such as 420, Jake's Dilemma, Brother Jimmy's, Bourbon Street, and Gin Mill, all of which are expecting large numbers of Federalists.

Other entertainment opportunities include the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, the Empire State Building, Central Park, Rockefeller Center and countless museums and churches (just to name a few). Students can also take advantage of half-price tickets to many Broadway plays and musicals. Public transportation runs twenty-four hours a day and cabs are always available, so attendants can always get back to their hotels. Besides the bars and clubs listed above, other Upper West Side nightspots include:

Restaurants:

  • Max Soha, Italian: Amsterdam at 123rd Street
  • Gennaro, Italian: Amsterdam at 93rd Street
  • Nice Matin, New American: Amsterdam at 79th Street
  • Isabella's, New American: Columbus at 77th Street
  • Bistro Ten 18, New American: Amsterdam at 110th Street

Bars/Clubs:
  • West End: Broadway at 114th Street
  • Smoke (Jazz): Broadway at 106th Street
  • Fez (in Time Café): Broadway at 85th Street
  • Brother Jimmy’s: Amsterdam at 81st Street
  • Amsterdam Billiards: Amsterdam at 76th Street
  • The Library (Hudson Hotel): Ninth Avenue at 58th Street
