About the Senate

Columbia Law School Student Senate
Your Agenda  •  Your Student Government

Welcome to the Student Senate! As your representatives, we are your liaisons to the Law School faculty and administration. We strive to promote the social and general welfare of students and foster a sense of friendship and respect within the Law School and in our larger university community and neighborhood.

To these ends, Senators work through committees to seek your input and develop programs that advance student aspirations and address student concerns. Senators also maintain a regular dialogue with the faculty through direct service on faculty committees that consider issues ranging from admissions and financial aid to clerkships and judicial relations. The Senate's Executive Board officers meet with Law School administrators to advocate your interests and ensure open communication across the Law School.

The Student Senate comprises 51 students:

  • 45 J.D. candidates (fifteen from each class)
  • 5 LL.M./J.S.D. candidates, and
  • the Law School's student representative to the University Senate.

Rising 1L and 2L Senators are elected each April; 1L and LL.M./J.S.D. Senators are elected each September. All student Senators serve a one-year term ending in April. The Law School's representative to the University Senate is elected to a two-year term every other April.

Please contact any Student Senator with your thoughts, comments or suggestions. Our general email address is senate@law.columbia.edu. We look forward to hearing from you!
