Brandon C. Mason, Columbia Law School J.D. Class of 2009, stepped up to fill two spots on the SIRR Board during his second year of law school (2007-2008). As Political Chair, he was responsible for monitoring governmental actions that impact immigrants and refugees at the local, state, and national level. He also kept an eye out for advocacy and activism opportunities that may be of interest to members. For part of the year, he also served as Publicity Chair until a vacancy in that position was filled. As Publicity Chair, he was responsible for promoting the Society for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, recruiting new members, and communicating details of events.
Before coming to Columbia Law School, he attended Macalester College in St. Paul, MN where he earned a dual degree in Classics and Political Science. Although he intends to work for a law firm after graduation, he firmly believes private sector work can and must be reconciled with a deep commitment to the public interest. In addition to his involvement with SIRR, he is the Chair of the Tenants' Rights Project at the law school and contributed over sixty-five hours of his time to voluntary pro bono during his first year. His other activities included Columbia Law Review, De Vinimus wine-tasting group, Columbia Real Estate Law Society, and Columbia Society of International Law.
