Procedures for Use of the Computer Vacuum
The Ergonomics Committee has purchased a computer vacuum for cleaning
keyboards and printers in Butler Library departments.
It is a Metro Data-Vac, has a 1.17 HP motor, and comes with a number
of attachments. Our committee tested the vacuum and we were pleased
with its operation. Library Systems bought an identical model.
The vacuum is for occasional cleanings but should not be considered a
replacement for covering keyboards.
The vacuum is stored in the administrative office supply room (510A). You
may borrow it by signing it out in the equipment sign-out notebook.
When using the vacuum, please note the following:
- COORDINATED USE
- We suggest that a department (or section or unit) coordinate use of
the vacuum and clean several printers and/or keyboards in one session.
This will minimize the noise and disturbance to staff members.
- OUTLET
- The vacuum must be plugged into a three-prong outlet. After
plugging in the vacuum be sure that small objects (e.g., paperclips,
pens) are well out of the way as the vacuum is quite powerful.
- N.B. The vacuum should not be plugged into the same power
strip as the PC. (Electric motors draw a lot of current and could
cause problems.) Also, the monitor should set to the main menu and
then turned off during vacuuming.
- HOSE ATTACHMENT
- The vacuum can be used for either suction (like a regular vacuum)
or as a blower for dislodging dust, etc. from hard-to-reach places.
Attach the hose to the narrower end of the tank for suction or to the
wider end for blowing.
- KEYBOARDS
- When cleaning keyboards, please use the round soft-bristle brush
attachment. If needed, also use the very small "pin pointer"
attachment for cleaning between keys. Make sure you don't have any
loose keycaps before vacuuming the keyboard. If any keycaps are
loose, notify your technical liaison instead.
- SHOULDER STRAP
- The vacuum tank is round and does not have any supports or feet to
steady it on a flat surface. Please use the shoulder strap or brace
the vacuum so that it does not fall to the floor.
- VACUUM BAGS
- Please check the vacuum bag before using the vacuum. If it is
full, replace the bag with a new one. Let someone from the Ergonomics
Committee know when we are down to only a few spare bags so we can
order more.
- ATTACHMENTS
- The vacuum has the following attachments:
- two tubular hose extensions
- round, soft-bristle brush attachment
- round cone-shaped attachment
- crevice attachment
- wide mouthed rectangular attachment
- small black "pin pointer" nozzle
Please be very sure to collect all attachments and replace them in the
box before returning the vacuum to the Administrative Office.
Let us know if you have any comments or questions about the vacuum and
its use.
