LSO Inventory of System Software
The internal inventory of LSO workstations is organized by the serial
number of the workstation. For each workstation that we have, a file is
kept containing as much information about that system as possible.
A separate file is kept with the system diskettes listing all software and
serial numbers.
This inventory is used not only for tracking what systems we currently
have, but is also critical for trouble-shooting purposes.
For Gateway
systems, the serial number is the first thing you will
need when calling customer support. In addition, each workstation could
potentially have a completely different set of drivers for Video and
CD-ROM. This file, ideally, will itemize the System Disk Version number,
as well as the part number for the CDROM and Video drivers. Other
information may be held in these files, such as user and function of unit.
For support purposes, you can use these files to cross-reference the
actual software inventory to locate the correct version of the software
you need. The physical inventory of system software is itemized in the
binder in 506 and at least one copy of the system disks are located in
that same area.
The Inventory Process
Keeping the inventory current is a coordinated effort between CTS and
the Micronet group. When a new system arrives on site, CTS will unpackage
and organize, per serial number of the unit, all documentation and
software. This information is provided to Micronet.
Micronet will extract, per unit, the shipping document (which lists all
specifics of the hardware and version numbers of the software), one copy
of the documentation per model of unit, one copy of the software disks
(per model of unit). Using this information the standard software form is
completed and an inventory file folder is created and filed away. The
software inventory file is updated and the software itself is added to the
physical inventory. The "duplicate" software and documentation is
returned to CTS for their filing purposes and is a good backup
source in case system disks are misplaced.
