Recommended Printers

1. Inkjet Printers: For individual workstations

   There is currently no inkjet printer recommended by LSO. If you have a specific need for an inkjet printer, please contact Jeff Rosedale or Stephen Davis to discuss.

2. Laser printers for individual use

   For letter/report quality office printing, for correspondence, reports, basic b/w graphics (low to moderate volume).
   • Okipage 10e LED Page Printer  -- Okidata OKI-62412601 (ca. $299) 600-1200 dpi, 10ppm, 4 MB RAM, 250 sheet input auto-feed, 100-sheet output, Parallel IEEE 1284 bidirectional, 1 year Limited Warranty with Overnight Exchange. Medium-volume single workstation printing with frequent correspondence or other need for letter-quality output. Duty cycle: 10,000 pages per month. (7/22/99)

   --Replacement toner cartridge for Okidata 10e and 10ex:

   • Toner Cartridge: Average life 2,000 pages at 5% density (Okidata part number OKI-52107201), ca. $24.

3. Laser printers for 'workgroup' or heavy-duty office printing

   For printing of multiple-copy reports, mailings, publications; medium to larger office workgroup.
   • HP LaserJet 4050N -- #C4120A (ca. $1450.), "1200 dpi," 17ppm, 16MB RAM, PostScript Level 2; duty cycle = 65,000 pages per month; 100 & 500-sheet paper trays included. 5. Dot matrix printers

   Draft printing, technical services workstations

   Standard features include: Super speed draft (300 characters per second, or CPS), high speed draft (240 CPS), utility (200 CPS) and near letter quality (50 CPS) print modes. Friction feed and pin platen standard for "Direct Path" bottom feed with short tear. Paper feed from top, rear and bottom. 6 button, 9 LED operator panel with menu selection of printer operation. Uses Standard Okidata 100 Series black ribbon cartridge.

   Public access terminals and workstations (CLIO and PCs)

   • There is currently no recommended public access terminal (serial) printer. These terminals will be replaced by PC workstations by 2002; in the interim LSO will continue to maintain the existing base of Siemens and Canon printers.

6. Color Inkjet Printers

    NB : All requests to order color printers must first be approved by the Deputy Librarian. At present, there are no recommendations for color laser printers.

   Below are current recommendations for inkjet color printers for office use.

   
   

   • HP Deskjet 890C-xi (#C5876A) or -se (#C5877A), (ca. $400) --
     [Inkjet, B/W: 600x600 dpi, 9ppm; Color: 600x300 dpi, 5ppm; memory not expandable; built-in 150-sheet sheet feeder; 1-year warranty -- For individual use in preparing presentations, signage, etc.; not for networking.

   Duty cycle = 3,000 total black pages per month; 500 total color pages per month. The difference between the xi and se models is the software bundle.

   Also order: HP Support Pack, Express Exchange 3-year extended warranty -- HP #5465A (ca. $80.00)

   • HP DeskJet 2500CM, ,(ca. $1750) --
     [Inkjet, B/W: 600x600 dpi, 9 ppm; Color: 600x300 dpi, 4ppm; 4 MG memory expandable to 100 MG; input tray holds 180 sheets; second input tray holds 500 sheets; includes HP JetDirect Print Server for Ethernet/LocalTalk; 1-year warranty (3/99) -- May be networked for a small group with moderate printing requirements.

   Duty cycle = 12,000 pages per month.

8. Cables, etc.

   A new parallel, printer cable should also be ordered whenever ordering a new LaserJet or Inkjet printer which is to be connected directly to a PC. (Printers being connected directly to the network, e.g., via a JetDirect server, do not require a printer cable.) Cables may be ordered from any vendor, but must meet the following specifications:

   • IEEE 1284
   • DB25(M) to Centronics 36(M)
   • Bi-directional
   • 10 ft. or longer
   The price for this type of 10' printer cable should normally be less than $20.00.

   HP makes this cable as: HP #C2951A, (IEEE-1284 cable connecting personal computers to HP LaserJet, DeskJet, CopyJet, OfficeJet, and JetDirect printers. 3.0 m (9.9 ft) A to B connection.), but cables from any manufacturer meeting the spec above may be purchased.

   Suggested vendor: Printer Connection, PO Box 927240, San Diego, CA 92192-7240. HP 10' Centronix Cable, #C2951A, $19.00.
