At the last meeting of the Butler Access Group (Dawes, DeDonato, Dillon, McIlvaine, Melendez, Smith), the need to clairfy our handling of lost and found items was discussed. What follows is the current practice in Butler Library... any Butler unit may bring items they find or receive to this central "drop off" spot. Butler Circulation maintains a "lost & found" collection of items (everything from eyeglasses to sweaters to notebooks to watches, etc)... with the exception of CU IDs. CU IDs, if found in Butler, should be brought directly to LIO. Valuables turned in to Butler Circ are kept locked in the Circ department. Library users may check with Circ to see if anything they think they left behind has been turned in. If there's any name on the lost item, Circ tries to contact the individual so the item(s) can be claimed. On the last Thursday of each month, the collection of lost & found items is cleared out and sorted by Mayra into basic categories and dealt with as follows: 1) Valuables: (watches, wallets, etc) are brought to Security in Low and a receipt is given for these Butler items. After 30 days, if items are still unclaimed, they are given a number and Low Security takes them to a local police station. (these types of valuables are the ONLY lost & found items security will accept! 2) unmarked books: are turned over to Gifts & Exchange 3) clothing: given to charity 4) the rest: (noteboks, umbrellas, etc) most notebooks have names or phone numbers in them so owner is contacted; otherwise if unclaimed after the 30 days they are held at Butler Circ, these items are tossed. If you have questions about Butler Lost & Found, please contact Mayra. (written by Howard Dillon, 11/21/95)
