Visual Resources/Information Services Working Group  (VRIS)

Meeting 11/12/02

Minutes

Present:  Bukowy, Carlucci, Cartolano, Davis, Gabbard, Gessner, Giral, Renfro, Wolven

Many thanks to Andy and Robert for their memo outlining goals for the Working Group and providing background information about the Visual Resources Center and the Media Center.

VRC/Media Center interest in central campus digital image resource:

·         Would provide access to Columbia community - limited access always an issue for  the VRC slide collections

·         Compatibility with the Library’s information services, and image resources elsewhere highly desirable

·         ArtStore  key factor now in any visual resource planing – will provide access to ca 300,000 images from UCSD (soft launch planned 2003)

Libraries:

Have a number of image-based digital projects e.g. APIS, Digital Scriptorium, Greene & Greene architectural project, Urban theatre archive, etc.

Need to develop architecture for a generalized image repository, define role of master metadata file, figure out how Luna Insight will interact with this – just a presentation medium – more?

Currently negotiating Insight license – will initially put up Columbia’s DS images – early new year will start to look at implications and costs of managing distributed sites.  Andy and Robert will be included in Insight visits to campus.

Libraries are also implementing Endeavor’s Voyager Library Management System, scheduled to go live next July – may want to look at this software for managing image metadata - Avery Index being produced now in Voyager.  Endeavor’s Encompass product is designed to manage digital content – libraries haven’t yet bought this – will evaluate for next year.

ACTION:

·         Next meeting (to be scheduled in 3-4 weeks) will focus on collections

·         Bob Wolven will put a group together to review metadata needs (will look at this also in context of ArtStore – UCSD’s marc-based catalog accessible on web)  Will report progress to the VRIS Working Group in January.
