Visual resources/Information Services Working Group

Minutes February 24th 2003

Present:  Bukowy, Carlucci, Cartolano, Davis, Gabbard, Gessner,  Sommer, Renfro, Wolven

Stephen Davis reviewed thinking to date on the use of Luna for a campus wide image base, and discussed some early analysis of the metadata used by the Media Center and by the Visual Resources group.  See:

www.columbia.edu/cu/libraries/inside/projects/visualresources

Stephen confirmed that Insight images are easy to download e.g. in Powerpoint, and that accompanying metadata can be downloaded also.

Features of the Insight Inscribe client  were also reviewed briefly.  Metadata can be created directly in Insight with this client or batch loaded into the system.  The Center and Visual Resources will need to evaluate these options.

Robert and Andy are planning to integrate their metadata over the next few months.  Visual Resources has approximately 30,000 “text records” of which 5-6000 are currently digitized.  The image database could include metadata for slides not yet digitized and this may indeed be  a useful way for faculty in Art History to identify images for digitization.

Rights issues were discussed – Robert suggested a phased approach to opening up the Media Center images campus wide - Art Hum may be a good start since this is a heavily used set of images and includes a fair percentage of Saskia images for which we have a license.
