TRANSCRIPTION IN COMBINATION WITH NON-ENGLISH LANGUAGE CATALOGING COPY WITH 040 $b

  1. Background

    Non-English Language Cataloging can usually be identified by the presence of 040 subfield $b coded for the language of cataloging, e.g., fre, cze Notes and subject headings may be in the language of the cataloging agency and the description may not conform to MARC 21.   2. Transcription Procedure

    Once the record is in CLIO, edit it to match the card in hand, paying particular attention to the following procedures that are unique to this type of material.

    1. Variable fields

      • 040--Delete $b and the language code. Add $d NNC

      • Description--Change punctuation and abbreviations to match the card in hand.

      • 5XX--Translate notes to match card the card in hand.

      • 6XX--Add subject headings from card in hand.

      • 7XX--Change access points to match the card in hand.
