Cataloging Practices Manual [CPM-835]

POPULAR BOOKS

  1. BACKGROUND

Books which are expected to be in demand by patrons are designated "popular" by selectors either when ordering or making a selection decision with book in hand.

If a book is ordered, selector writes "POP" on the Local Notes line of the order and designates the acquisitions and the cataloging priority as P1. MAS inputs "Pop" or "Popular" into the NO field on the OPR record. On receipt of the item, MAS adds a blue "Attention rider" and a red priority streamer to the book to call attention to the note in the OPR.

If selector has book in hand (approval, standing order, CDA, etc.), he/she writes "POP" in the General Notes field of the T2 form and inserts a red priority streamer in the book.

  2. PROCEDURE

If either the OPR or the T2 form have the designation "POP" or "Popular" for the copy being processed

    1. Search for copy and if standard copy is found, process following established guidelines with the following additional steps when creating an item record
      1. Tab to Loan Code line
      2. Overtype norm with pplr
      3. Scan barcode as usual
      4. Charge book and prepare for physical processing according to guidelines

    2. If standard copy is not found, track and route item to MSP for original cataloging. After original cataloging is completed, change the loan code on the item record from "norm" to "pplr" as described above.

NOTE: The loan code "pplr" will limit the circulation period to 4 weeks regardless of the category of patron who charges it out, thereby making a popular book more readily available to patrons.
