Cataloging Practices Manual [CPM-6853]

Call Number Assignment for Videorecordings

Background

There are several different classification schemes in use for videos. It is necessary to consider the library location, and possibly in addition the physical format and content of the item in order to know how to assign the call number. Follow the procedures given under the appropriate library location in this document in order to assign call numbers for videos.

Procedures

  1. Location: Butler Media Center (bmc and bmc, res)

    1. Videocassettes

      1. Booknotes videos (episodes from the television program Booknotes) are classed together in Z1035.A1.B66, regardless of the subject matter of the individual video. The specific broadcast date is used as the last element of the call number (this is the equivalent of the volume number). The word VIDEO is used in $k of the call number.
        Example:

        $a bmc $kVIDEO $b Z1035.A1 $c B66 10/23/97

      2. All other bmc (but not bmc,res -- see separate section below) videocassettes (both fiction and non-fiction) are assigned an accession number in place of a true call number. The accession numbers begin with the prefix VIDEO and are five digits long (e.g. VIDEO00001, VIDEO00002, etc.). There is no $k with the material type designation. Assign numbers by doing a call number search on CLIO (fi co VIDEO) to see which was the last number used and assign the next number in sequence. Be sure to look at numbers that have the prefix VIDEO, and disregard those with the longer prefix VIDEORES (see below). The entire call number is placed in $b. Note that the classification type code is T, not L.
        Example:

        $a bmc $b VIDEO00325

Added copies are assigned the same number as the earlier copies, just as would be the case with LC classification.

      3. All bmc,res videocassettes (both fiction and non-fiction) are assigned an accession number in place of a true call number, in a separate sequence from that used for plain bmc. The accession numbers begin with the prefix VIDEORES and are five digits long (e.g. VIDEORES 00001, VIDEORES 00002, etc.). Please note that it is necessary to input a space between VIDEORES and the number, which is a difference from the plain VIDEO numbers. There is no $k with the material type designation. Assign numbers by doing a call number search on CLIO (fi co VIDEORES) to see which was the last number used and assign the next number in sequence. The entire call number is placed in $b. Note that the classification type code is T, not L.
        Example:

        $a bmc,res $b VIDEORES 00257

Added copies are assigned the same number as the earlier copies, just as would be the case with LC classification.

    2. DVD's (both fiction and non-fiction) are assigned four digit accession numbers with the prefix DVD (e.g. DVD0001, DVD0002, etc.). There is no $k with the material type designation. Assign numbers by doing a call number search on CLIO (fi co DVD) to see which was the last number used and assign the next number in sequence. The entire call number is placed in $b. Note that the classification type code is T, not L.
      Example:

      $a bmc,res $b DVD0501

Added or replacement copies are assigned the next available number in the same way as new titles. Multiple copies of DVD's on the same record will therefore have different call numbers. Please note this difference in treatment from added copies of videocassettes for bmc and bmc, res.

    3. Laserdiscs receive LC call numbers (see section III below for further information on the assignment of LC call numbers) and material type designation LASERDSC in $k.

  2. Location: Music (mvr)

All music videos are assigned acquisition numbers and do not use $k with the material type designation. The number to be assigned is determined by searching CLIO to see which was the last number used, and assigning the next (as for bmc,res DVD's above). The alphabetical prefix used with the acquisitions number depends upon the format, and also the content of the video. Note that all music videos have classification type T, not L.

Added copies are assigned the same number as the earlier copies, just as would be the case with LC classification.

    1. Videocassettes use prefix VC
      Example:

      $a mvr $b VC255

    2. DVD's use prefix MUSDVD
      Example:

      $a mvr $b MUSDVD117

    3. Laserdiscs use different prefixes depending on whether the content of the disc is a film, or a music performance.

      1. Music laserdiscs use prefix LD

        Example:

        $a mvr $b LD113

      2. Film laserdiscs use prefix LF
        Example:

        $a mvr $b LF155

  3. All other locations use LC classification for all formats and either $kVIDEO or $kDVD. Call numbers are assigned based on the content of the item:

    1. Non-fiction videocassettes and DVD's

All non-fiction videos are assigned an LC call number corresponding to the subject headings found in the record. Call numbers are verified or assigned according to standard procedures for books (not yet online).

      Example:

      $a sci $k VIDEO $b TK2551 $c .T73 1997g

    2. Fiction videocassettes and DVD's

      1. If the video is an adaptation of a book, the video is treated as an edition of the book and is assigned the same call number as the book, using the publication date of the video.
        Example:

        Title: Sense and sensibility
        Book location and call number: $a mil $b PR4034 $c .S4 1992
        Video location and call number:$a leh $k VIDEO $b PR4034 $c .S4 1995

      2. If the video is an original work of fiction, it is classed in PN1997 and a cutter is assigned to correspond to the title. It is generally necessary to carry the cutter to several digits in order to approximate an alphabetical order by title within PN1997.

Note: In PN1997 screenplays, films, and works about films will all be interfiled alphabetically by title and then by main entry.

        Example:

        Zan Boko (film) $b PN1997 $c .Z35 1988g A zed & two noughts (screenplay) $b PN1997 $c .Z43 1986 Zelig (film) $b PN1997 $c .Z45 1990g
