BACKGROUND PRINCIPLES:
This document summarizes BIBL, CHLD, MHLD and ENUM/CHRON coding for multivolume sets.
The bibliographic record (MARC field 300) will contain v. if a multivolume set is incomplete. Code local holdings in MHLD only.
If the set is complete, the 300 field describes the number of physical volumes. If the CUL set is incomplete, code local holdings in MHLD only.
If the number of physical volumes differs from the number of bibliographic volumes, code the number of physical volumes in 300 and code the number of bibliographic volumes whether issued separately, together, or bound locally in MHLD field 866.
In all ENUM/CHRON coding:
Use - (dash) in ENUM/CHRON to indicate what bibliographic volumes are bound together locally.
Use / (slash) in ENUM/CHRON to indicate that bibliographic volumes have been published bound together.
MULTIVOLUME CODING SUMMARY:
COMPLETE SET
When the 300 field in the bib record has, for example, 5 v. in 3, code:
DATE CODES -- Start and End dates as appropriate CONTENTS -- 505 0 or 2 TLNF -- Appropriate treatment code, e.g., COK COPY STATUS -- 3 CALL NUMBER -- |vv. at the end of call number MHLD (866 field) -- The complete run, e.g., Bd.1-5 ENUM/CHRON -- Caption term and volume number for each physical volume, e.g., Bd.1 Bd.2/3 Bd.4/5
INCOMPLETE SET

MULTIVOLUME WORK COMPLETE IN ONE PHYSICAL VOLUME
Code CHLD as single volume monograph when 300 field contains a statement such as 3 v. in 1 Do not code MHLD or ENUM/CHRON.
