ASSIGNING LWEB "CALL NUMBERS"
BACKGROUND
Until April 2007 catalogers assigned a variety of "call number" terms
to remote access electronic resources cataloged in CLIO. The term chosen
as the call number had to correspond to the form/genre heading used in the
655 field of the bibliographic record, and, in case of RTI resources, to
the resource type assigned by the selector.
Efforts to stream line cataloging practices and changes to the RTI
resource types prompted a consolidation of the list of LWEB "call
numbers."
The following terms were replaced by ERESOURCES:
Biographies, Book Collections, Catalogs, Databases, Dictionaries,
Directories, Encyclopedias, Full-text Resources, Indexing & Abstracting
Services, Journal Collections, Maps, News & Current Events, Newspapers,
Numeric Databases, Seminar, Webcast, and Website.
CURRENT PRACTICE
ERESOURCES--Use for all remote access electronic resources
that do not fall into any of the categories listed below.
EBOOKS--A single title either complete in one part
(monograph), or completed (or intended to be completed) in a finite number
of parts (monographic set/continuation). Use ERESOURCES for collections of more
than one title. Example
EJOURNALS--A single title issued in
separate, designated parts. Parts may constitute an issue or
individual article. Must bear numerical or chronological designations and
be intended to be continued indefinitely. Ejournals include serials,
periodicals, annuals, journals, proceedings, transactions, etc.
Example.
Consider all other resources monographs, even those of a dynamic nature,
e.g., a website that is updated with revised information.
IMAGES--A resource consisting primarily of pictorial data.
Example
US Government Documents--US government documents on
MARCIVE records.
