LOSS OF ACCESS PROCEDURES FOR FREE ELECTRONIC RESOURCES
Note: Paid resources or free resources with Serials Solutions
records are maintained by CERM.
PROCEDURES
- Search the Internet or consult with the selector to see if the
resource has moved. If found, correct the URL using the
Resolver URL View/Update/Redirect Form. Update the OCLC record with
the new URL.
- If not found, search the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine
- If an archived version of the resource is found, add the following
data elements to CLIO and OCLC:
- 538: Mode of access: World Wide Web. Original Web site at URL no
longer available as of [date]
Example:
538 $a Mode of access: World Wide Web. Original Web site at
http://www.soatsudan.org/ no longer available as of June 15, 2009.
- 500: Title from Web site archived on [date] via Internet Archive
(viewed on current date).
Note: Use the date of the latest successful crawl, not the
earliest.
Example:
500 Title from Web site archived on Feb. 10, 2008 via Internet Archive
(viewed June 15, 2009).
- 856/920: Change URL to the search result page generated by the Wayback
Machine using the
Resolver Url View/Update/Redirect Form and add a subfield
"z" Archived site note to the URL

- If an archived version is not found, suppress the record as usual.
This will remove holdings from OCLC.
- Follow LCRI 9.7B and record a public note documenting the loss of
access in CLIO and OCLC.
Example:
$z Electronic address (http://www.example.com) not available when searched
on [date]
- URLs for ceased titles are not deleted from the resolver.
