EBOOKS PROCEDURES Under Development!

Columbia Policy

E-books may be cataloged as new editions or reproductions. In addition, a reproduction may either describe the item in hand and refer to the original in a 534 note or describe the orignal and refer to the reproduction format in 533. Columbia will accept any of the three treatments on standard copy. In general, original catalogers should treat e-books as new editions unless there is expedient cause to do otherwise.
  1. Fixed Fields

  2. 006 & 007 fields for computer file

  3. 050 field

    If there is no call number in the 050 field, copy the call number from the print version and change the date, if necessary, to match the ebook publication date. If a print version is not found, assign call number following standard procedures.

  4. 245 Field

    Code GMD |h [computer file] following subfield a.

        Example:
        245:00: |a Galle |h [computer file] : |b a port city in history
    

  5. 256 Field (File Characteristics
        Example:
        256:  : |a Computer data.
    

  6. 5XX Notes

    Notes are entered in the order specified in in AACR2 not in numeric order as are serials. Consult AACR2 Chapter 9 for full details. Code notes about content as usual. Three notes are specific to e-books.
