Cataloging Books to be Filmed

BACKGROUND

Staff in the Preservation Division provide cataloging for brittle materials being filmed. Occasionally there is no copy available and in those cases OSMC catalogers are asked to create an original record for the book to be filmed, which will then be turned into the record for the microfilm reproduction.

PROCEDURES

• Create the record for the original in OCLC using a PR@ session. Code the form of item as a and include the $h [microform] in the 245.

• Before producing the record, apply the constant data record that will add the microfilm reproduction fields to the record. (Note: the constant data record does not change the form of item in the fixed field and does not add the 245 $h.) This constant data creates a prospective record. Once the filming is complete, the record will be udpated by the microfilming vendor.

  To apply the constant data, at the home position type acd opalmf var

• Produce the record (i.e. type p at the home position). Do not update the record!

• Put the book with a printout of the OCLC record on the table in Lars Meyer's office.
