Biographical Note
American novelist, short story writer and playwright. She was born in 1896 and died in 1965.
Scope and Contents
Personal and professional correspondence of Dawn Powell, including she received from publishers, agents, admirers of her work,
friends, family and others. Among the cataloged correspondents are: Malcolm Cowley (4 letters); John Dos Passos (57 letters);
Ernest Hemingway (1 letter); Gerald and Sara Murphy (23 letters); Mark Schorer (2 letters); Edmund Wilson (15 letters); and
Powell's own letters to her family. There are drafts of her playscripts and drafts and related materials for her novel "The
Golden Spur". There are 4 scrapbooks of her husband, Joseph R. Gousha, recording the plays he saw in Pittsburg from 1910 to
1914, and 4 journals of her son. Additional personal and professional papers of Dawn Powell (correspondence, manuscripts,
diaries, and misc. materials) are on deposit with this library and will be added to the collection in the future.
