Field research in Jerusalem, Israel and the Israeli-Occupied Territories
on Christian pilgrimage (1983-1985) Subsequent work on Palestinian
articulations of nationalist identity, local shrines and regional,
sectarian, nationalist identifications, tourism and tour-guiding, etc.
carried out between 1985 and present in Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Beit
Sahour with funding from the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropolgical
Research and others. 

Currently working on a data base project on media formulations of 
national identity in a period of state formation. 

Other areas of research: identity formation and nationalist struggle in 
Former Yugoslavia. On editorial boards of Review of Middle East Studies 
and Critique of anthropology.
