Description of work:

Research:

Dissertation interests include the confluence of modern 20th century
ideologies of social justice, such as Marxism, and discourses of religion,
esp. Islam, in the Bengali context, between the 1920s-1940s, until
partition. Especially interested in how "aesthetic" types of sources, e.g.
literature, poetry, song, drama, as well as traditionally "historical"
sources, such as political pamphlets, political speeches, private
writings, essays, and news discourse may combine. In this combination, I
seek to question how categories such as "religion" and radicalism become
defined.

Other interests include theater and performance in South Asia. Working on
two projects related to this topic, including an anthology of diasporic
South Asian plays and on-going work on Indian South African theater
history and practice as it relates to contemporary politics in South
Africa.

Teaching interests include religion and politics in modern South Asia,
performance studies, and modern South Africa.
